The Healthy Schools Campaign's annual healthy cooking contest, Cooking up Change, was a success again this year. Chicago public school culinary students worked in teams to promote health and wellness by creating a nutritious meal to be served in all public high schools in the Chicago area. The student-created school lunches met the cost requirements and nutrition guidelines that Chicago food service directors face, as well as the high standards for taste and visual appeal that culinary studetns strive to achieve. The winning meal, created by Richards Career Academy, was served to over 20,000 students in 90 public schools across Chicago. On May 5
th the lunch will be served in select cities across the United States, including Washington, D.C., and New York City. In addition to working with school students to promote health and wellness, HSC provides training and support for parents, teachers, principals and school nurses to engage in wellness efforts. These are cornerstones to HSC's groundbreaking initiatives to create a healthy learning environment for kids in the Chicago school system.
